Yes, to different extents. POP3 for example saves the complete email on the hard disk. IMAP works slightly differently depending on how you have configured it. It will either save just the headers, or the complete email for offline use.
You probably want a web interface to handle your email then. Most email providers have that facility where you can login through your web browser.
