I’ve been testing eM Client with SmarterMail and find it works well. I left Microsoft Outlook Legacy (what we call it TODAY) a long time for SmarterMail’s Web Mail due to license costs. I am a consultant, while I support Microsoft Outlook Legacy for my customers, I am getting ready for Microsoft Outlook Legacy to be EOL and looking for a replacement as Microsoft Outlook “NEW” has quite a set of issues for me
While I do Server Dev in various languages I’ve not tried APP Dev on Android thus what I am describing below is my understanding and NOT from first hand experience.
Just for FYI, gMail eMail Client on Android uses ActiveSync directly to SmarterMail which has its own baked in PUSH notification from what I understand.
With SmarterMail and my Edge Firewall I can see what is happening from a Network perspective. Recently, I discovered that eM Client has its own middleware Cloud Messaging Protocol for PUSH notifications and interfaces with SmarterMail’s MAPI Protocol from Microsoft. This was a surprise to me that such a middleware existed for eM Client.
This Service is Hosted by Hetzner in Germany which is perfectly fine, however, I was hoping to see other eM Client Hosted Services around the world just in case Hetzner has an issue in the EU. It would be great if such Service was Hosted in the USA. Hetzner has Data Center’s in the USA BTW.
I’ve been Hosting SmarterMail from my own Data Center for over 10 Years. SmarterMail is a full Exchange compatible eMail Server supporting both EAS and EWS/MAPI. It could be that SmarterMail could provide such a service baked into the SmarterMail’s Server Software thus eM Clients associated with SmarterMail could access the middleware Cloud Messaging Protocol for PUSH notifications directly from the associated SmarterMail eMail server.
