Categories do not follow Custom Rules even in local folders (Mac)

Hello!
I’m using eM Client on Mac (trial period; looking for Spark Mail alternative). I’m also using it on Android.
I have a custom domain created in Google Workspace - so it’s a Google login - and in theory (if I have this right) should operate with the shift-drag of emails into the proper categories. While it moves the current emails to that category (Forums), it does not move emails subsequently received. It does not do this correctly on either Mac or Android.

But right now I’m focused on the Mac.
On the Mac I used the Settings | Mail | Categories | Custom Rules | Local Folders and manually added email addresses, since these weren’t being populated by Shift-Drag in the eM client.

Most emails are still getting placed in the Updates category, some in Promotions, rather than in Forums.

Any suggestions on how to address on Mac?
(I haven’t tried the manual changes on Android; I can live with the Android not working - I’m generally quick-checking emails there anyway.)

Warm Regards,
David

Google has its own rules for categories that are applied on the server. They cannot be viewed inside eM Client.

The category rules in your screenshot are for LOCAL folders, so they would only be applied to messages received within Local folders.

You can read about this feature on our blog, which also includes explanation on how Gmail accounts work differently:

Note: For Gmail accounts, the custom category rules cannot be viewed at all.
This is how the Gmail categories work: the eM Client app sends the new category rule information to the Google server, which saves and applies them for future messages, but it does not provide a way to access and view them, not on the web interface nor third-party apps like eM Client.

Additionally, changing categories for messages in Google accounts is only available with paid licenses.

Olivia - thank you, this is helpful!

I am wondering how to consider my custom domain in Google Workspace - is it considered a “Gmail account” (which would make sense) or not?

And based on the documentation statement in that link (“Note: Changing categories for messages in Google accounts is only available with paid licenses.”) is the trial (Demonstration Mode) of eM Client - which currently says on the Help | License | Activate popup “You still have 8 days left of the Trial, which has no feature limitations.” - should the Gmail recategorization be working or does that actually not work for the Demonstration Mode?

Yes Gmail recategorization normally does work for the trial in the desktop by either “dragging the email subject” to the Category tab you want, or by “right clicking the email subject” and click “Category” and choose the Category you want.

If you are using eM Client mobile app on Droid or iOS, “press / select the message” and then “press the 3 dots” at the top right. Then press “Category” and choose your Category you want.

After you have selected the Category on the desktop or mobile app, you will see a popup message appear to confirm if you allways want that senders email to go to that Category.

Thanks, cyberzork!
You described my understanding and the individual (or even group if I select multiple) emails do go into the new category. But the behavior I’m expecting is that by pressing Shift and dragging the email that all future emails also go to the new category - and that’s what’s not happening.

Even just focused on Mac… subsequent emails from the same sender are still going to the “Updates” category not the “Forum” category.

Thanks for the information - I think it confirms why I’m asking for help.

One additional thing - I do now understand that Local Folders won’t help in this situation; things should be happening “invisibly” between eM Client and Google. And I’m wondering if the custom domain isn’t causing the hiccup?

if I select multiple) emails do go into the new category. But the behavior I’m expecting is that by pressing Shift and dragging the email that all future emails also go to the new category - and that’s what’s not happening

Using the desktop PC or Mac, clicking on the first email and then holding the Shift and dragging to the Category tab works for me with Gmail.

Using the eg: Mac after selecting a group of messages with the Shift key, when I then drag them to a Category tab I want “before you let your mouse button go” you will see a “red number” appear to show how many after going to be moved.

So if you are already seeing the number and you get the popup message confirmation appear and the selected messages do move to the correct Inbox, “but don’t in future”, that will be something to do with Google’s end as has happened to me a few times in the past with Gmail categories.

So all I’ve done for single or multiple emails “that come back in the wrong category”, is to just keep moving them to the right category and eventually they do, but sometimes can take a few goes till Google get it right. As @Olivia_Rust advised for Gmail accounts that recategorizing part is all done at the Google end and not in eM Client.

I’m wondering if the custom domain isn’t causing the hiccup?

I don’t think it will be anything to do with the domain and more just a Google issue where maybe eg: the recategorization part at Google is not allways working 100% due to maybe has eg: load issues or maybe bugs, so sometimes takes a few goes till it gets the right category.

Thanks cyberzork!
I’ll keep trying (I have been for a bit now) - but with extra attention. See if that helps!
