I get frustrated when looking thru mail folders. Sure there is the narrow version available on the right, but often the subject line is just too long to fit the width of the list (where the preview is handy) See image:
However, without using “Open” from the mouse (I may be scrolling the list using the arrow keys), works (not going to complain about how it decides how big to open the window; IMHO it should het a hint from the size of the existing client window that holds the list).
However, if one is skimming the list using only the mouse, the standard sometimes fails to open the window (have not figured out if it only when the PC is busy, and the app is polling for the event, or if the event never makes it to the app.
So my request hee is for a more reliable and predictable outcome from double-clicking on an item in the list.
