Before I upgraded to beta 10 I recall reading somewhere here how to switch off that (to me) annoyance but I can’t find the checkbox nor the message I saw. Can someone remind me how to switch this off, please? That’s for beta 10 for Mac if it makes a difference.

I seem to recall that @Gary pointed to a checkbox to remove it.
If you mean the “Folder list items count hover popup” like in the below Inboxes example, then yes as per @Gary advised in the link below, there will be “in the next V10 Beta update” an option to disable it for those who don’t want it, and also a new “smaller option” for those who do still want it enabled.
