I’ve just deleted a former post since I’m now pretty sure that my backup problem started with the new update, and I see others have had problems with it too. Each time my eM Client runs an automatic update (once a day), I get the message that the backup folder is unavailable. Well, that wasn’t a problem two or three days ago!
About a year ago an update caused the sending of emails to malfunction. I then uninstalled eMC and reinstalled it. That did the trick. I may have to do it again, or would “restore backup” be the vest solution? Suggestions, anyone?
Can you copy the full error?
Perhaps re-setting the backup folder in menu>Settings>General>Backup might be a better thing to try first?
Thanks for trying to help, Olivia!
Here is a screen dump of the error message. The path to the backup file seems right (it 's the same as it has been for years, I haven’t changed anything), with the last backup file dated 25.05.03.I don’t know exactly the date eMC was updated, but the trouble must have something to do with that.update. I may try to 1) Move the backup file to a different direvtory and reset the backup, or 2) Restore backup (afraid I might mess up something ,) or 3) uninstall and reinstall eMC (worked wonders the last time I had email-problems ).
.
I’d recommend checking the properties of this folder in your Documents (righ-click>Properties and make sure it’s not accidentally set to “read-only” - if so, change it so it’s not and then try again).
You could also try making a test folder like “eM Client 2” in the Documents, set the backup to THAT folder, and then try to run the backup, see if that works.
- I checked the properties of my Documents directory and the eM Client-folder, nothing wrong as far as I could see.
- I made a test folder in Documents as you suggested and got the same error message as before.
- Now I thought “What if I made a test folder elsewhere?” So I placed an “eM Client 3” folder in Desktop - and when I changed the file path in eMC and made a new backup - everything fell into place!
I still have no idea what has happened in the hidden depths of my computer, and i still suspect that the 10.3 update is to blame. But I’m glad things are back to normal, and having the backup files on my desktop is something I can live with.
Thanks again, Olivia, for your good advice that put me on the right track to the solution. People like you save the less knowledgeable of us from much headache and misery!
Same backup problem than that of odsoer just above. Backup folder suddenly became unavailable and the creation of a new one do not solve the problem.
Here is the message I got 3 or 4 times now:

Hi Daniel,
As I said above, I had to place the backup folder under a slightly diffent name in a different directory (Desktop instead of Documents) to make the backup work. I made a manual backup first and when I checked, the backup file was there, but marked incomplete. I checked again after a few minutes and then it was complete. This afternoon I checked again, and my daily automatic backup had done its job. The only remaining question now is why eMC can’t find my Document directory anymore.
Hope you can find another solution if mine does not work for you.
I had to place the backup folder under a slightly diffent name in a different directory (Desktop instead of Documents) to make the backup work.
Sounds like a user profile problem to me thats happened in Windows OS, as to not be able to write to the Documents / eM Client folder or eM Client 2 as @Olivia_Rust suggested to try above in her post, means something either has either gone wrong in the Windows registry with your user profile or your admin username possibly as changed or been limited / restricted in some way.
So if you already have full read / write access to your Documents & all sub folders, then suggest to eg: rename your current Documents folder and create a new Documents folder. Then copy all your exiting documents across / over to the new Documents folder and then see if eM Client will then backup again to the default “Documents / eM Client” folder.
Before renaming and creating a new Documents user folder, “right click on the old one” and then click “Properties” at the bottom and then “check the Documents profile location path” so you then make sure the new Documents folder “has the same location path” after creating it. Eg: Some Windows Documents folders point to One Drive by default and not local unless you change that.
Now if a new Documents folder still has the same write issues, Then id personally be creating a new admin user profile and then copy all your exiting profile files over to the new profile. Then backup eM Client on your old profile to the desktop as @odsoer suggested and then copy that backup to the new admin user profile desktop folder. Then reinstall eM Client on the new admin user profile and skip the setup and restore your backup via "Menu / File / Restore. Then finally change the backup location in Settings back to “Documents / eM Client” folder and close and reopen eM Client. Then try a manual backup and see if it works.
Cyberzork, your suggestions seem promising! I’ll try them out as soon as I find the time. For the time being I can live with the temporary solution. Thanks to you and all those on the forum who spend time and efforts helping others. It’s amazing to experience that someone is always ready to help at short notice!
Again, just like odsoer did, I placed to day a backup on the desktop and it went perfectly well.
The usual folder C:\Users\Daniel\Documents\eM Client\Sauvegardes eM Client appears indeed to be set to “read-only”. Unfortunately it is impossible to change that setting.
