Hello
I am having alot of problems with finding where my database is stored and also back up files. When I go into account settings and click on the file path to the database I get directed to empty folders. Also I follow the path to the back up location again and the EMClient folder is empty. I changed the folder options on this folder to show hidden files and the whole folder just disappeared. I have a huge problem with my laptop (blue screen of death every hour and shutdown) and I am trying to get my emclient files to another computer. I set up a backup scheduled for every day (as the laptop could die any minute) but the folder is empty. However my harddrive is filling up at an alarming rate and the only reason I can think of is that somewhere on my computer there are back up files building up. Can you help. I am so worried that I amm going to lose 15 years of work files!
Under Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Backup, you will find the location of your backup files. By default it is set to C:\Users\name\Documents\eM Client. There you will usually find 5 zip files labeled something like backup_201710032330.
Your safest bet would be to make a backup before your laptop crashes, and then copy the latest backup files from this directory to the same one on the other computer. Then do a restore on that machine. There you will be offered a choice of which file to restore.
You can do it manually by copying the complete database directory. You can find this at Menu > Tools > General > Storage. By default it is C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\eM Client. I think when you changed the folder options to show hidden files, you unticked the option, therefore hiding the files. That is why it disappeared. A quick way to get there in Explorer is to type %appdata% in the address bar, then hit enter. You will see the eM Client folder there.
You want to copy the whole directory to the same location on the other computer. Then open eM Client and everything should be there.
Thank you for replying. I know how to look for the files. My problem is that whne I get to tahe location there are no zipped files for the backup. Also when I follow the path to the database storage the folders are empty again.
But when you open eM Client, your emails are there?
yes
OK. In Explorer, search for a unique file from the eM Client database like widgets.dat That will give you some idea of where the database is stored.
ok. I searched for widgets.dat and it says no results
What version of eM Client are you using?
If it is version 6.x search for mail_data.dat
its version 7.1.30794.0
Seems nothing is on your computer, but you can still use the database.
My last suggestion is to go to Menu > Tools > Settings > General > Backup and change the target directory for your backup. It can be a USB or second hard drive etc. Make your backup that way, then restore it on the other computer.
Alternatively, if you are using IMAP, just setup the account on the other computer and all your emails, events and contacts will sync there.
weird is that if i search for EMClient folder my computer doesnt find it either!
i will try your suggestion to change teh path
so i am trying to do a backup and cannot see how to do an instant one. I went to the path you said and it allowed me to change the path - the folder is on my extrenal hard drive. However the backup is not happening. How do I make it start?
i can see how to schedule to do it every day but how do I do a backup right now?
Strange because the install folder is C:\Program Files (x86)\eM Client, and you cannot change this during install. We had that discussion somewhere else. So it should at least have found that. (note it is two words - eM Client not emclient)
Menu > File > Backup
Thank you so much for your help. I have done the backup and at least now I can transfer the files to another laptop and get the first one fixed. When I get it back I will reinstall EM Client and hopefully those folders issues will sort themselves out. Thank you for your time.
