Attachment overview section is not working properly and still shows attachments even after the associated email has been cleared from the trash Mac V10.4.4293

I’ve been using em Client for a while now and I think the attachment overview is a very helpful tool. Unfortunately it displays attachments that no longer exist and can no longer be opened because the corresponding e-mail has already been deleted. This drastically distorts the search results. It affects all my IMAP and Exchange accounts. Does anybody have the same problem or any idea how to solve this issue? I had contact to the eM Client support but they were not able to reproduce the problem. Im using eM Client version 10.4.4293 (5858dfd) on Mac version macOS 26.2 (25C56).

If you are seeing attachments for emails that have been deleted and those IMAP / Exchange attachments “are not showing online in webmail”, then sounds like your mail account in eM Client has got out of sync with your server mailbox.

So I would fist suggest “to try running the repair on your mailbox” which resyncs your server account locally and clears the local cache. Once the repair has been completed, your emails will be initially slower to reread till fully cached again.

To repair your mail account, right click on your account “Inbox” (or “All Mail” if it’s a Gmail account), and then click “Properties” at the bottom. Next click the “Repair tab” and finally click “Repair”.

If the repair still doesn’t fix it, then go to “Menu / Accounts” and remove and readd your account which that then will usually fix it as well.

Note: Before doing either of the above, make a manual backup via “Menu / Backup” incase you need to restore for any reason. You can see when the backup is complete in Show Operations via clicking the drop-down on the right of Refresh top left.

Thank you for your detailed explanation! However, I’ve already tried all those steps.

I’ve already repaired and resynchronized all existing folders. I’ve also removed and re-added the account. I’ve completely uninstalled and reinstalled eM Client. I performed the reinstallation twice (once completely fresh and once restoring from a backup).

Unfortunately, none of this has worked. Initially, everything seems fine; attachments are deleted when I delete the corresponding e-mails. After a while, however, the attachments are no longer deleted.

Incidentally, new attachments from new e-mails are always correctly added to and displayed in the attachments overview.

Then i would next close eM Client and then “rename the following hidden database folder” to eg: eM Client-Old . Then reopen eM Client and setup as new to see if its a database problem.

(Mac Hidden hidden eM Client database folder)
“Users\yourusername\Library\Application Support\eM Client”

I’m already using two different profiles, and the problem occurs in both. However, I’ll gladly try again with a completely new profile without a backup.

Incidentally, the Terminal command “/Applications/eM\ Client.app/Contents/MacOS/eM\ Client --reindex-attachments” didn’t work either.

As suggested, I created a new profile and therefore a new database. I only added one of my affected email accounts and didn’t make any other settings. The same problem occurs: Yesterday I received three emails with a total of five attachments. I completely deleted all three emails today and emptied the trash, but the five attachments are still displayed in the attachment overview.

Could this be due to the server settings, even though sending and receiving works perfectly?

Or is it related to the download settings for the attachments?

Can you do a screenshot example of where these attachments are still showing after deleting the emails.

Also “what Mail server hosts your IMAP and Exchange accounts” incase other users on this forum are also getting that same issue.

My email accounts are hosted by:

Yes “i can replicate that using eM Client for Mac V10.4.4293” with OS26.2 and a eg: Gmail account, where yes i received an email to my Gmail Inbox with a .png attachment and it shows in the “Attachments section” bottom left of eM Client.

However if i delete the email with that attachment in my Inbox and clear it from the trash “it does still does show in the attachments section bottom left” even after closing and reopening eM Client.

If you try to open the attachment in the attachment section by dbl-clicking it, “it won’t open”. If you try to delete the attachment, “it won’t delete”.

Also yes even running the manual database repair in the terminal doesn’t delete it either “where that command normally would if it was a database error”. So appears to be a bug with the Mac version.

If you do exactly the same test using eM Client for Windows V10.4.4209, the attachment “doesn’t show in the attachments section” after clearing from the trash. So is only a Mac issue.

Ive sent that off to be investigated.

It’s behaving exactly as you described. Thank you so much for your support, for reproducing the problem, and for forwarding it for investigation.

I truly hope the problem can now be resolved.

Support have retested this and found no issues their end.

I appear to now have fixed the problem (for new received emails) by “dragging the eM Client app to the Mac recycle bin” and then “reinstalling V10.4.4293 again”. So the Mac app “must have been corrupted in some way” on my eM Client installation even though the app was working fine.

However for older attachments they won’t delete from the attachments overview section. So i can only presume there was “some sort of database error” when i received those email attachments.

Thank you for the information. To me this happens constantly with new emails I receive, not just old ones. As I said, I’ve reinstalled emClient several times, so I really think I can rule out a database error.

What I can’t understand is that the database seems to be defective every time, even after reinstallation.

As you have reinstalled the Mac version and tried new databases, hopefully the devs can then find why this is happening constantly. I also would like to be able to delete old attachments.

Update - eM Client Support advised they have now reproduced the issue and their developers will be looking into it.
