Account shows offline until I click Send and receive

Both of my accounts have the box checked to include when sending and receiving, but the one that isn’t the default has a little exclamation point beside the account name on the left and there’s a message saying it’s offline until I click the Send and Receive button. Why doesn’t it send and receive automatically with the default account?
