Access emails on new hard drive

(1) Copy the OLD emClient folder to a flash drive or to the desktop

(2) Next locate the same name folder of your existing eMC installation.
(3) CLOSE eMC
(4) Delete contents of the folder from (2)
(5) Copy the contents of (1) folder to the folder (4)
(6) Start eM Client

Hopefully my instructions aren’t too convoluted… I hate writing instructions, too easy to screw up

Hi @PMR

Do as @sunriseal instructs …
However, you MUST make a backup of your present installation before you start
just in case things go wrong!
They shouldn’t, but better safe than sorry.

Personally I would disconnect from the internet.

Thank you sunriseal and skybat … I’m just about to try.
First, I have found the backup button for the current emc but where will it backup to?

Hi @PMR

Go to: Menu ->Settings ->General ->Backup
Here you can set your taget directory
AND
Whilst you are here set
Frequency: 1 Day
Preserve: 5 backups

Okay, so I’ve followed the instructions. Now, emClient won’t even open.

An initial thought would be that the folder from your old computer possibly contained damaged file(s).

Run Task Manager and see if there is an instance of eM Client already running. If so, right-click the entry and choose “End Task”. Then try running eMC again.

There is nothing running in Task Manager - but emC is still not opening.

Try a computer reboot…

Just tried that but it’s still not opening!

No errors on screen?

Not sure if this was covered previously… what eMC version were you running on your old computer and what eMC version are you running on current computer?

Can you open the OLD computer file and take a screen shot and post it here?

Hi @PMR

READ THROUGH ALL OF THIS BEFORE YOU START

If you don’t understand DO NOT GUESS, email and ASK

STOP eMC before you attempt anything.

Are you able to edit SQL files?
Keep a copy of eM Client as below:
C:\Users\your unique user name\AppData\Roaming\eM Client

Clearly a file or files copied from the old installation is corrupt.
You will need to copy the last backup that you made before attempting recovery to your desktop.
Unzip this file and save to a folder of any name you like.

Copy & overwrite the unzipped files to:
C:\Users\your unique user name\AppData\Roaming\eM Client
Attempt to run eMC

If this doesn’t work delete the contents of:
C:\Users\your unique user name\AppData\Roaming\eM Client
Copy the unzipped files to the folder eM Client
Attempt to run eMC

Unfortunately if none of this works you will need to reinstall eMC
You will be able to use your most recent Backup file to restore.

I WILL get back to you, I have to go to collect my wife from the airport, so it will be about 2hrs.

I’ve tried that and it’s not been successful!
When I got this laptop 2 years ago I saved my previous emc mail to a usb and I still have it. But I can’t remember how I uploaded it. It must have been simple because I was able to do it!!! If you could tell me how to do that I may be able to upload that data as well as the data from the old drive. I’ve tried ‘copy and paste’ into the emc folder then restarting but without success. thanks

NOW:
‘I’ve tried that and it’s not been successful!’
I don’t know what you mean by ‘tried that’ because there was much to do.
OK but I do not know what is your situation now.
Have you deleted everything and done a clean install?
If so have you used your most recent backup to restore?
What have you tried to copy & paste with no success?
What specifically do you have on the USB?

Hi,
Have you deleted everything and done a clean install? Yes, I uninstalled and then reinstalled emc
If so have you used your most recent backup to restore? It just came up with the same amount of emails as before.
What have you tried to copy & paste with no success? I have copy & pasted data from a usb
What specifically do you have on the USB? It was 2 years ago when I bought a new laptop and needed to transfer my emc data on to the new laptop. So I had saved the previous emc data on to the usb but I can’t remember what I did next.
Does this help?

What have you tried to copy & paste with no success? I have copy & pasted data from a usb into the emc folder on the c:/

Qué tal @PMR

Was the data from the USB, the data that was in the folder?
C:\Users\your unique user name\AppData\Roaming\eM Client

No, it was data from 2 years ago when I transferred from another PC. I just can’t remember what I need to do with the data! :frowning:

Sorry, perhaps I did not ask the question correctly for you.
I know the data on the USB was from 2 years ago, I need to know what that data is.
Was the data on the old computer from the location:
C:\Users\your unique user name\AppData\Roaming\eM Client
Or do you not know?

No, it’s not that location. It’s here:
This PC > Documents > Old Mail > Talktalk (p 4e3 > Inbox

And the files are all EML Files

Qué tal @PMR

OK, this is what I suggest you do because you have been attempting various things and I have no idea
what is the condition of your current installation of eMC.
I have to assume that you have the backup file that you made recently somewhere safe, put it on
the desktop.
Download the latest version of eMC here:
https://www.emclient.com/dist/latest/setup.msi
Completely uninstall eMC
Install latest version of eMC
Skip setup account and instead go: Menu ->File ->Restore (you will need to point restore to backup
on your desktop.
When this is done go: Menu ->File ->Import ->Files ->Email (.eml) ->Click Next and follow the
instructions on screen.
Any questions ASK before you start!

¡Buena suerte!
