I am aware from previous posts that one can’t search for names alone, but it would be lovely if I could, without having to download all emails offline. IOS does it well.

If you’re in Contacts, you can of course search by names. In the search engine, you can set it to search by sender and then the name will be searched too if your contact has it correctly set.
