My Win10 has just unexpectedly crashed and completely reinstalled itself, taking all the programmes back to factory settings in the process.
I can see an eM client folder in appdata, but I’m not sure if/how I can restore my previous eM setup?
When I follow the wizard should I be choosing import from applications/emclient 6 (in which case which folder should I point it to?), or from files (in which case where do I find the files I need?)

If your previous version in the crashed system was version 6, then please download v.6 from the release history https://www.emclient.com/release-history. Then after you install it, if the database is in its default folder, it will be automatically pulled to the program.
If you didn’t loose the program during the crash and it just doesn’t load the database, you can point it to the database directory in Menu > Tools > Settings > Storage.

Hi RusselThanks - it looks like that was already the default location and it’s not pulling in any of my data… does this mean it’s lost??
If you are using IMAP or Exchange, your message folders will be synced with a server, so simply adding the same email account to eM Client will re-sync the data.
Otherwise it depends on how the reinstall was done.
If you did a reset, you will have had an option to keep your data. If you chose that then your data will have been moved to a windows.old folder. Close eM Client and copy the /Users/ _ yourname _ /AppData/Roaming/eM Client folder from the windows.old folder to the same location on your C: drive, replacing all the files and folders. When you restart eM Client, all your data will be there as before.
OK so I’ve realised that the file path that the eM client is defaulting to in Settings/Storage is C:\Users\TEMP\AppData\Roaming\eM Client. The file dates of all the files in here are from yesterday when the unexpected reset happened.
In the folder path C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\eM Client I can see what look like all the original data files.
If I point the storage pathway to the latter will this connect with the old files? I’m slightly hesitant as there’s a big message underneath saying ‘changing the database location will create a blank database no data will be copied’…
Yes, changing to the latter will connect to that database. The warning simply means that you will not have access to the TEMP user data while connected to the MICHAEL user database. You can always switch between them if there is something you need to export.
Thanks - I just tried to change it and it won’t let me! I can navigate to the correct eM client folder but when I click the select folder button it still shows the TEMP version in the pathway. I can’t type over it either… any ideas??
You can close eM Client and then change it in the registry.
Look for Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\eM Client. Then delete the DBLocation value to reset to the default location. You can also edit the value if you want to use a custom one.
Could you clarify: I’ve followed the path and found the Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\eM Client folder, but I’m not sure what to change in there?
The files I can see are:(default), CurrentCulture, dbcheckmagic, HighestAllowedVersion
Because there is no DBLocation value, that must mean that you are logged into Windows as Temp.
If you want to continue using that user profile, close eM Client and copy C:\Users\Michael\AppData\Roaming\eM Client to C:\Users\TEMP\AppData\Roaming\eM Client.
