eM Client will not open when I click email links in Word or similar programmes

I cannot get eM Client to open a new mail when I click a ‘live’ email link in Word or similar. Sometimes it opens around 70 (yes 70!) IE windows that tell me ‘The operation was cancelled because the default mail client is not properly installed’. Can anyone suggest a fix? I want to continue using eM Client!

I have the same issue!!! A lot of IE windows open

This is a known issue on some Windows installs (not Em Client). It was on my new Dell laptop (same symptoms). Most people advise to check the file associations… but what worked for me, and has worked for many others is to check for a missing reg key. See below steps - I think you’ll find it resolves the issue:

  1. Open Registry Editor (type regedit in start menu).
  2. Locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes branch.
  3. Check if mailto key is present and has a string value of URL Protocol attached. Note: keys are alphabetically sorted, so first there are the ones prefixed with a dot (file extensions), look for mailto farther down.
  4. If HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\mailto key is not missing in your registry, then the cause of your problem is somewhere else, try uninstalling IE10 (Programs and Fetures -> View installed updates -> locate IE10 and uninstall).
  5. If HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\mailto is missing as it was in my case, you have to restore it. In parent branch ( Classes ) right click, select New -> Key, name it mailto . In this new key create a string value (right click, New -> String value), give it name URL Protocol and you’re done. Close regedit and see if it worked.

Hi, this was a known issue with Internet Explorer as eM Client is using some of it’s components, can you please send me an email to [email protected] with a reference link to this forum topic if this issue occurs on your computer? I have a workaround that I can send you, which should fix this issue.

Thank you,
Paul.

I ́ve resolved the issue with the solution proposed by cptok. Now it works fine. Thanks!

Hi again, glad the above solution worked, let us know if you come across any other issues or questions, we’ll be happy to help.

Thank you,
Paul.

 Thanks for your fix!

Hi, for everyone following or coming across this issue, please download this file:
http://www.emclient.com/tools/mailto.zip and run the registry file on your computer, this should perform the above suggested fix and you should no longer have issues with multiple IE windows.

Hope this helps,
Paul
