Distribution lists becoming blank

Hi, I have about 25 distribution lists (all run through a Google Apps account). All are made out of contact groups at this point so they're easy to re-create when they get blanked out.

All but the very first distribution list, after some amount of time that I haven't been able to determine, just become completely empty. The only list that doesn't empty itself is the first one, alphabetically. eM Client 6 set up on 3 computers - two running XP, one running windows 8.

Hi,
we succesfully replicated the issue, the reason behind the issue are some changes from google's side.
We're working on a fix and hopefully it will be fixed in future releases, however it may take some time.

I hope you can manage to use the application with the current setting.
Thank you and sorry if this is causing any trouble.
Paul.

I am having the same problem with my distribution lists but running Windows 7.  I use the distribution list once and when I want to use it again, all the email addresses and names have disappeared.  When do you think this will be fixed? I'm setting up the lists in EM client.

Having the same problem. Create distribution list which works fine until I close emClient. On reopening, the distribution list is now a contact with no info in it. This happens every time.

Me too, and I downloaded EM Client BECAUSE you have distribution lists, unlike Outlook. Looks like I will have to look elsewhere :(

Would it be possible to just treat contact groups in gmail as distribution lists? or to allow someone to send to a whole group? As it stands, I made a group for each of the distribution lists (because they kept getting deleted), but there is no way to send an email to everyone in that group besides opening the group & selecting them all, then right clicking & choosing "Send Message". This isn't a good option for me, as I regularly need to BCC the people in the lists / groups, and the selecting all & "Send Message" option puts them all in the "to" field with no option of BCCing them without manually cutting them from "to" and pasting them in BCC. This, I feel, would be a simple but effective workaround. For instance, Thunderbird treats all groups in google contacts as distribution lists. With a list called "01 Attorneys", I can create a new email, click in the BCC field, and type "01" and "01 Attorneys" pops up as an option. I don't want to use thunderbird, though, because it is clunky and hideous. Please let me know if this would be an option that could get implemented quickly. Thank you in advance!

Hi,
unfortunately no, groups and distribution lists are currently set as two different feature, as I mentioned we're working on a fix for the distribution lists and once it's fixed it should be working properly, you'll be able to create a distribution list from the whole group. However you can make an "Idea" topic about this feature and we might add it in future releases.

Thank you for understanding,
Paul.

I have the same issue with Yahoo groups. And I lost all my distribution lists.
I found that if I save the list locally I might be able to get it back when rebooting the software but if I did not realize that by default it saves a distribution list to my Yahoo Contacts then I lose all the list.

So now there are 2 issues:
- losing all distribution lists
- not being able to manage a Yahoo Group as a Distribution List (where are we supposed to enter an "idea" topic

In the mean time I"m really looking forward to the fix for distribution list because I do need to send emails to 87 people in BCC for the HOA distribution newslettter.

Hi, I'm not sure if I completely understand the issue, are you having issues with displaying contacts in groups or are your created distribution lists just becoming empty?

Could you please send me an email with description of the issue, thank you,
Paul.

I don't see where to email you, but my original email to support contained the following:

Hello,
I've had a client of client of mine using eM Client with Google Apps for Business for about 3 weeks now. They use three computers with the same email account (google apps for business). Up until the last week or so, distribution lists were working fine. I set up the gmail account, synced email / calendar / contacts, then made some distribution lists out of contact groups I had made. After this, I set up the same email account on the other two computers, and they properly downloaded all email / contacts / calendars / distribution lists.

Starting about a week ago (I believe, that's the best estimate my client can give me), the lists started becoming blank. I can delete all lists, refresh contacts on all computers reflecting the deleted lists, then recreate the lists on one of the computers. Now the lists will start showing up on the other two computers, but they are blank again. If I remove the account on the computer I created the lists on, then set it up again, the lists come in and are blank as well.

that message is now a week or two old, so the time frames listed above are off. I exported the distribution list created in eM Client to a vcard, and also exported the vcard of what google had after eM Client uploaded it, and I can send both, but they contain peoples names and email addresses, so I'd prefer to email them instead.

The issue is with lists becoming blank when syncing to google (and apparently yahoo as well).

As far as contact groups, I was suggesting as a workaround or alternative to lists, to just allow emailing a contact group, because those DO sync back and forth across computers / google. You just can't do anything with them really in eM Client. Like I said above, that's how thunderbird does it - they don't even have any sort of "distribution list" other than syncing to contact groups. If you make a group in google contacts, it IS a distribution list in thunderbird & vice versa. If eM Client copied this - at least for google / yahoo users - instead of making a single contact with multiple uuid's, then it seems distribution list issues would disappear & it wouldn't be something that would / could break from a server-side update.

Any update on this, Paul? Responded 9 days ago now, and no response back. If you will tell me your email address, I'll happily send the vcards created in eM Client as well as what gets uploaded to google's servers via eM Client. Thanks!

Hi, I'm really sorry you're experiencing this issue, we're having some compatibility issues with yahoo. What version of eM client are you currently using?

Can you try right clicking you contacts folder and selecting Properties > Repair and click the repair button? It might fix the issue.

Thank you,
Paul.

Hi, the version I'm using is the latest release, 6.0.20154.0. Distribution list issue still persists, same as it has been since it initially broke. I am, and have been, using google apps for business & gmail, never yahoo for me.

doing what you've asked has no effect. I can run the repair a thousand times, and the list I create in eM Client persists.

The second I remove the account and re-add, or add the account on a different computer, the distribution list is blank. Gmail's data doesn't change, so it seems to be something that eM Client isn't uploading correctly to Google's (and apparently Yahoo's) servers.

If you would give me your email address, like I asked, I would gladly send you the lists in vcard format and/or whatever else you need.

This is a huge problem for a client of mine to the point that we're considering moving to an exchange server and going back to Outlook.

Thank you,
-Gabe

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue, can you please go to Tools > Settings > Advanced and turn on GData logging for the problematic account? Save the settings and restart the application, then please try to replicate the issue - create the distribution list and let it sync with google, when you receive any errors or notice that the distribution list is empty again, go back to the advanced settings window again and click on 'Send Logs'.

Please add my email as a copy to the email with the logs (mcgregor@emclient.com) and add a reference link to this forum topic.

Thank you,
Paul.

Hi, thank you for the received logs, we've examined them, but unfortunately the issue is based within the synchronization with google. Since distribution lists are not completely supported by Google, the synchronization currently has some issues. We're working on a fix for this issue, but unfortunately I can't be sure whether it'll be fixed in the next release or not.

I hope you can manage to use the current settings, and that this is not causing too much trouble.
Thank you for understanding,
Paul.

Thanks for getting back to me. That's very unfortunate. Would it be possible to copy the functionality of Thunderbird and treat contact groups as distribution lists (or just allow a user to send an email to a contact group)? This makes more sense to me, as it's fully supported by google, and already working perfectly in Thunderbird. I'd MUCH rather use eM Client, as its interface is far superior, but it's missing some key functionality.

Thank you,
-Gabe

Just checking back in as I haven't seen any updates. Is there any progress being made in fixing the distribution list issue? or is it even being worked on at all? Thanks!

This problem is still unfixed - 3 years later!!! It's got nothing to do with yahoo or goggle, it's a bug in emclient!!

I have the same problem.  I create a distribution list in em Client as per the instructions in the guide - sometimes it saves, sometimes it doesn't.  Even if it does, when I close and re-open emClient the list is empty.  This problem is driving me batty.  It is a basic function of an emClient - is there a solution for this yet?

Yes, there appears to be! You have to turn on 'Show local folders' in Tools/Settings. Then when you create your distribution lists, click on the <email address>/Contacts/ at the bottom left of the Dist. List box, drop down 'Local' Folders'  and make sure the lists are saved in Contacts in there, not in your msn or Hotmail or whatever, folder. This was shown o me by the support team, and it seems to work for us. Hope that helps!

You can't sync a Google Group to an eM Client Distribution List because they are not the same thing. A Google Group is a collection of contacts, whereas a distribution list is a specialized contact that contains a list of email addresses/contacts.

What you can do is select all the contacts in the Google Group and by right-click choose Create Distribution List.

Be aware that not all servers will support the format, so if the distribution list is synced to a server, it may end up empty. This is the topic of this thread. The solution is to save the distribution list in a local folder as suggested above.
