"5.7.1 Authentication Failed" after new account setup. Won't accept password. POP3/SMTP looks right.

Installation of eM Client v.7.1.33101.0 and import of account/folders from Thunderbird were successful, but I am unable to send/receive email. Compared eM account settings to the functioning account settings in Thunderbird, and it all appears correct.  Tried switching default mail to eM in system settings.  Confirmed password is working correctly by logging in directly to ATT/Yahoo. Ran “fix” on Diagnostics tab and got “Fix Failed”.
Thank you

Can you disable your anti-virus and firewall and try again?

If that does not work check that you have the following port and security policy combinations in your account settings:

SMTP
Port 587 = Force usage of SSL/TLS

IMAP
Port 993 = Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy)

POP3
Port 995 = Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy)

Thanks for the prompt reply.  Unfortunately, I’m still getting “authentication failed”

As you suggested,
I disabled firewall/antivirus
Changed SMTP to Port 587 = Force usage of SSL/TLS.
Confirmed POP3 as Port 995 = Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy).

It is still failing on send and receive.  I also tried rebooted my computer and modem and it failed again.

I was not able to locate IMAP in Account Settings.  I only have 4 tabs:  General, POP3, SMTP, Diagnostics.  Would you please tell me where to find IMAP.

Thank you

You won’t have an IMAP tab if you are using POP3. Sorry, I should have mentioned that.

With some services like GMail, in order to use POP3 you might have to enable using less secure apps in your Google settings. Which email provider are you using?

I’m using ATT/Yahoo.  The servers are att.net

Can you post the complete error. You can find that in Menu > Tools > Operations.

ATT/yahoo has implemented an App password setup. I would suggest using this new setup should fix problem

One thing I noticed is that they recommend port 465 for SMTP. Although this port has been reassigned, some providers do still recommend it. So change SMTP to port back to 465 with policy set to Use SSL/TLS on special port (legacy). I don’t think it will make any difference, but at least you are using their recommended settings.

The error above indicates that there may still be a problem, probably with your anti-virus. Please make certain that it is disabled before you try again. Some anti-virus applications also have an email function, so make sure it is completely disabled.

If you are using a VPN, maybe disable that and try again.

Did you try Bob’s recommendation below?

If you are still not able to get it working, and have a Pro License, you could open a support ticket. I am sure they will be able to help you further.

RESOLVED using an AT&T Secure Mail Key… Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

I found ATT support pages with explains new security requirements and provides instructions for both Secure Mail Key and OAuth

1.  I first went to MyATT page and created a Secure-Key for my email account.

2.  Then I went to Accounts > General tab > Authentication Password field and replaced my regular email password with the SecureKey.

>> Inbound and Outbound tests were successful.

I kept the POP3 and SMTP tab authentication defaults of “use identity credentials”

My ATT/Yahoo web account and my Thunderbird account (which I will eventually remove) still use my password.

I had changed the SMTP settings changed to 587 - Force SSL/TLS earlier in the troubleshooting, which I kept.  But I did confirm that the original settings of SMTP of 465 - SSL/TLS (legacy) also works.

Many thanks to you both for your time and help!

Thanks for all your investigation and help.  I did get it working, which I detailed in my comment below.  After the secure key fixed the issue, I re-enabled the firewall and antivirus and retested, and confirmed that it works fine with them running.  Thanks again!
