Font keeps reverting back to default, can't be changed

how do you permanently change the font when replying to email? it seems the default setting is Times New Roman pt. 12 font, but everytime i change the font to Arial it keeps reverting back to TNR. is there a permanent solution? i must say this is very frustrating. i might go back to gmail because of this.
