calendar not showing time blocked out

I have set up my calendar using categories in different colours.Unfortunately after selecting a colour change for thecalendar as a whole - i.e. the calendar colour button on the tool bar the colours for individual items reverted to black and stopped showing the duration blocked out either in colour or with a box. This makes the calendar almost unusable.
